Aspen is not a rooftop-bar town in the way that a city with tall buildings is, and the honest version of this list is short. Only one place below has a bar that is actually on a roof; the other two are upstairs rooms that serve drinks above street level. We have said plainly which is which, and how much evidence sits behind each rating.
1. MOLLIE Aspen
The only place here with a bar that is genuinely on the roof. MOLLIE's Roof Terrace Bar runs Wednesday through Sunday, 4:00pm to 10:00pm, which makes planning simple: if it is Monday or Tuesday, the terrace is not an option. The hotel also runs a ground-level restaurant and bar with breakfast, lunch and dinner service, a cafe and wine bar for the afternoon, and Petit Familia on the same Wednesday-to-Sunday, 4:00pm-to-10:00pm schedule, so a closed terrace does not end the evening. It sits at 111 S Garmisch St, a few blocks off the Galena Street core. The 4.7 rating comes from 272 reviews, promising rather than fully settled.
2. Belly Up Aspen
Upstairs at 450 S Galena St, suite 202, and the best-established room on this list: 4.7 across 821 reviews is a settled figure, not an early one. It is a live music venue with a full bar rather than a terrace, so the reason to come is the booking. Past acts include The Chainsmokers, Nora En Pure, Zhu, Goldfish, Lotus and Alesso. Doors are geared to a late night; Yelp lists a 2:00pm opening every day of the week, with Monday and Tuesday running to midnight. Check what is on sale before you plan around it, since the room follows the show calendar.
3. Explore Books and Coffee
An upstairs cafe in a historic house at 221 E Main St, serving coffee, pastries, snacks, wine and beer above a bookstore. This is a daytime stop, not a night one: the bookstore runs 9:00am to 6:00pm and the cafe closes at 5:00pm, open daily. Go for an afternoon glass with something bought downstairs rather than for a sunset drink. The rating is 4.7 from 237 reviews, a reasonable sample for a small room, though most of those visitors came for books and coffee rather than the bar side.
What we left off
No chains or closed businesses were removed. We did drop several well-reviewed Aspen restaurants that appeared on the earlier version of this list because nothing in our research shows they have a rooftop or upstairs bar: Clark's Oyster Bar, which runs lunch, a weekday happy hour from 3:00pm to 5:00pm and dinner at street level, and Matsuhisa on East Main, an evening sushi room. Tiny Pine Bistro and its Thursday-to-Saturday tiki bar is in Carbondale, not Aspen, so it falls outside this guide.
