What it has instead are cafes, wine bars and neighborhood restaurants that keep a burger on a broader menu, which means the hunt is as much about knowing the hours as knowing the kitchen. We have ordered this list by how directly each place answers the burger question, and we say plainly where the burger evidence is documented and where we are going on the strength of the kitchen overall.
1. Kalimotxo
This is the only place on the list with a burger we can point to in writing: Kalimotxo's daily happy hour is listed as featuring $10 burgers and cocktails, alongside half-price wine bottles and select tapas. The rest of the operation is Basque pintxos, Andalusian tapas, Spanish wine flights and sherry cocktails at 1813 E 6th St, with the full dinner menu starting at 5 pm daily. The rating is 4.5 from 289 reviews, which is a solid but not yet fully settled figure. Go during happy hour rather than late, and treat the porrones and pintxos as the reason to stay after the burger is gone.
2. Counter Cafe
A small all-day counter on East 6th with the most diner-shaped menu here, and 4.4 from 1,449 reviews, a count large enough that the rating is proven rather than provisional. Breakfast is served all day and the kitchen runs 7 am to 3 pm every day of the week, so this is a lunch stop, not a dinner one. Pick-up is available across the same hours. The room is genuinely small, so the middle of a weekend morning is the worst possible arrival time. The brief does not document a specific burger, so check the menu when you get there.
3. Better Half Coffee & Cocktails
The widest hours of anything on this list, which matters when a burger craving lands at an awkward time: 8 am to 3 pm Monday, 8 am to 10 pm Tuesday through Thursday, 8 am to 11 pm Friday and Saturday with the kitchen closing at 10:30, and 8 am to 8 pm Sunday. Happy hour runs Tuesday through Friday, 3 to 6 pm. The rating is 4.4 from more than 1,700 reviews, the largest sample here after Odd Duck. It sits on Walsh Street west of downtown, does weekday breakfast and lunch, and closes for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Phone is voicemail only.
4. Jacoby's Restaurant & Mercantile
Ranch-raised, Southern-made cooking on East Cesar Chavez, and the sort of Texas beef-forward kitchen where a burger fits the house style. Rating is 4.3 from more than 1,300 reviews, a settled number rather than an early one. The schedule is narrow: supper Wednesday and Thursday 5 to 9 pm, Friday and Saturday 5 to 10 pm, brunch Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 2 pm. That leaves Monday and Tuesday out entirely. Reservations are available through OpenTable and are the sensible move on a weekend. We are listing it on the kitchen's record; the brief does not name a specific burger.
5. Foreign & Domestic
A small New American room on East 53rd in North Loop working with sustainable, organic and local product, holding 4.5 from 1,149 reviews. Dinner only, Tuesday through Sunday, 5 pm to 9 pm, closed Monday, and the reservation window on their own site runs from 4:30 pm. The four-hour service and the size of the dining room mean walk-ins on a Friday are a gamble. This is the most chef-driven kitchen here at a price point below the tasting-menu tier, though as with most on this list, no specific burger is documented in our sources.
6. Odd Duck
The best-proven rating in the group by a distance: 4.7 from 3,526 reviews, a figure that many years of service have settled. The format is seasonal small plates on South Lamar rather than a burger counter, so include it if you want the strongest kitchen and are happy to eat whatever the menu is doing that week. Dinner starts at 4:30 pm daily, final seating is 9 pm Sunday through Wednesday and 9:30 pm Thursday through Saturday, and there is no takeout. Happy hour, 4:30 to 5:30 pm Sunday through Thursday, takes 25 percent off selected food and bottles of wine under $100.
7. Carpenters Hall
The restaurant inside the Carpenter Hotel on Josephine Street in South Austin, and the most flexible of the sit-down options: brunch Friday through Sunday 9 am to 2 pm, happy hour 2 to 5 pm, dinner from 5 pm with the kitchen going to 9 pm Sunday through Thursday and 10 pm Friday and Saturday. The same kitchen supplies the poolside menu from noon to 6 pm daily, and the Carpenter Coffee Bar runs 7 am to 3 pm. The rating, 4.3 from 323 reviews, is the least settled of the larger restaurants here, so treat it as promising rather than proven. Reservations are taken.
8. SPREAD & CO.
The highest rating of the smaller listings, 4.6 from 327 reviews, from a counter-service spot on Manor Road in Cherrywood that also handles catering with 24 to 48 hours notice. One caution: the published hours conflict across their own site and third-party listings, with one version showing Monday to Friday 7 am to 7 pm and another showing Wednesday to Sunday 9 am to 3 pm with a late Thursday. Call ahead at (512) 814-2002 before making the trip. Placed last because both the review count and the hours picture are the thinnest here, not because of the food.
What we left off
Two listings from the previous version did not match the premise. Awesome Hibachi At Home is a mobile hibachi catering and private chef service working out of Del Valle, with a menu of steak, chicken, shrimp, lobster tail, fried rice and garlic noodles, so it is not a burger destination in any useful sense. Fabrik Austin serves seasonally focused tasting menus that are 100 percent plant-based, by reservation only, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Both are worth their own guides; neither belongs in this one.
