Several of the best are attached to restaurants or hotels, which means the kitchen often closes an hour or two before the bar does. Below, the list runs from the most thoroughly reviewed to the newest and least tested.
1. The Cellar at Duckworth's
This is the most settled rating in Charlotte cocktail bars: 4.6 across roughly 1,650 reviews, a figure large enough that the score is unlikely to move. It bills itself as an American speakeasy and sits below street level at 330 N Tryon Street, a short walk from most uptown hotels. Hours run 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 4 p.m. to midnight Thursday through Saturday, so the early-evening window is the reliable one. The food side leans toward burgers, steak and small plates, including mac and cheese and a charred romaine, if you want something more than bar snacks with the drinks.
2. Idlewild
The strongest rating-to-volume combination on the list: 4.7 from 509 reviews, which is enough to call the score proven rather than promising. It sits in Unit 2 at 424 E 36th Street in the Novel NoDa building, and it is a night-only operation, opening at 6 p.m. every day and running to 1 a.m., with a 2 a.m. close on weekend nights. Listings differ on which nights get the later hour, so check before planning a late arrival. Idlewild has also advertised open bar packages for groups, including a two-hour 8 p.m. option priced per person, which is worth asking about for a party.
3. Dot Dot Dot
A 4.6 across 567 reviews puts Dot Dot Dot on firm footing, and its Park Road address at 4237 Park Road makes it the pick for anyone who does not want to deal with uptown parking. Monday through Thursday it runs 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Friday 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m.; the posted hours cover Monday through Saturday only, so treat Sunday as uncertain. The kitchen shuts before the bar each night, typically an hour earlier, and the food menu flags gluten free, vegetarian, pescatarian and vegan items.
4. Sophia's Lounge
Sophia's is the hotel bar option, inside the Ivey's Hotel at 127 N Tryon Street, and it is listed under cocktail bar rather than restaurant. The 4.4 rating comes from 576 reviews, a large enough sample to trust, and the slightly lower score reflects a room that serves breakfast, dinner and drinks to a mixed hotel and downtown crowd. Dinner service starts at 4 p.m. daily and runs to 11 p.m. most nights, to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and to 10 p.m. on Sunday. A three-course prix fixe has appeared alongside the cocktail list, and reservations are taken in half-hour slots from 5:30 p.m.
5. Blue Door
Blue Door holds a 4.7, the highest score here, but from 115 reviews, so read it as promising rather than established. The bar is at 1508 South Mint Street and works on rotating themed menus; the current one is called The Great American Roadtrip, built around fresh and locally sourced ingredients, and the bar has advertised menu cocktails at $12. Plan around the schedule: it is closed Monday and Tuesday and open Wednesday through Sunday from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. There is a small bites menu rather than a full kitchen, so eat first if you are staying late.
6. BackStage Lounge at SouthBound
The lounge attached to SouthBound at 2433 South Blvd, with a 4.3 from 254 reviews, a middling score on a decent-sized sample. It runs its own cocktail list and small plates menu separate from the restaurant, plus wine, beer and cider, and SouthBound's site has also posted a separate holiday Miracle menu for the space. Listed hours start at 5 p.m. and run to midnight early in the week. Its usefulness is location: it is on the South Boulevard strip, walkable from the light rail, and works as a first or last stop rather than the whole evening.
7. Elsewhere Cocktail Bar
The least tested entry, at 4.3 from 167 reviews, so the rating could still move in either direction. Elsewhere is at 101 W Worthington Avenue, Suite 140, in South End, and the schedule is the thing to know: closed Monday, opening at 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 4 p.m. on Sunday with a 10 p.m. close, and now opening at 1 p.m. on Saturdays, which makes it one of the few cocktail-first rooms in the neighborhood serving in the afternoon. Note that one of the domains circulating for the bar is parked and inactive, so confirm hours by phone.
