Charlottesville is a wine and beer town that has never had many cocktail bars, and it still does not. There are three worth naming. Two are very good and one is worth going to for reasons other than the drinks, which is said here plainly rather than dressed up.
The Alley Light
The best of them and the hardest to get into. The Alley Light is a small upstairs room off Second Street doing shared plates and a serious cocktail list, and its 4.7 across 701 reviews is the strongest combination of rating and volume of any bar in the city.
Dinner runs Wednesday to Sunday, 5 to 10, closed Monday and Tuesday. Bar reservations are taken for 5 or 5:15 only, and they explicitly cannot seat you at 7 or 7:30, so either go early or expect to wait. The plates are small and the prices are not.
Oakhart Social
4.7 across 313 reviews, on West Main. Same rating as The Alley Light with less than half the reviews behind it, so treat it as equally good and slightly less proven. It is a restaurant with a strong bar rather than a bar that serves food, which makes it the easier of the two to get a table at on short notice.
The Doyle Hotel
Included with a caveat. The Doyle's rooftop is the best-sited drinking spot in Charlottesville and the bar programme runs to housemade shrubs and elixirs with a proper zero-proof list, which is rarer here than it should be. But the hotel carries a 3.6 across 438 reviews, and at that volume a middling score is a real signal rather than a couple of bad nights.
Go for the roof and the view, not because it is the best drink in town. Open from 3pm daily, to 10 most nights and 11 at weekends. Mondays 3 to 6 is a dog-friendly happy hour. (434) 293-6789.
