Best Dive Bars in Charlottesville

Charlottesville, Virginia — updated August 21, 2026

Four Charlottesville bars that stay open late and do not care what you are wearing.

Listings verified

A note on how this list is ordered, because it is the one guide where our usual method does not apply. Everywhere else on Guide2 we rank by rating weighted against review count. For dive bars that is close to useless: a low score often means the room is dark, the floor is sticky and nobody has redecorated since the nineties, which is the entire point. These are ordered by how well they do the job instead.

Miller's Downtown

The one that matters. Miller's has been at 109 West Main since the Downtown Mall was worth avoiding, and it is still the bar most likely to have something happening on a Tuesday. Live jazz runs Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. Happy hour is every day, 5 to 7.

The kitchen stays open until 1:30am, which in Charlottesville is close to a public service. 4.3 across 1,066 reviews, easily the deepest history of anything on this list.

Dürty Nelly's Pub - Deli

An Irish pub attached to a sandwich counter, which sounds like a compromise and is in fact the best argument for going. Lunch runs daily and the evening menu starts at 5, so it is one of the few bars here where eating properly is not an afterthought.

Open 11am to midnight Monday to Thursday, 11am to 2am Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 8 on Sunday. That Sunday close is early and catches people out. (434) 295-1278.

Coupes

On Elliewood Avenue just off the Corner, open Tuesday to Saturday 5pm to 2am and closed Sunday and Monday. Late only, small, and rated 4.0 across 64 reviews, which is a thin enough count that it belongs here on character rather than consensus.

It has a happy hour. (434) 529-6387.

Trinity On The Corner

3.8 across 252 reviews, and included deliberately. Trinity is a student bar on the Corner and reads exactly as that number suggests: loud, packed on game days, indifferent on a wet Tuesday. If you want a dive near UVA that is honest about what it is, this is it. If you want a quiet drink, go literally anywhere else on this list.

What we left off

The Double Horseshoe Saloon and The Livery Stable both appeared in the previous version of this guide. Both have closed permanently, which we confirmed against Google's business status rather than taking our own records at their word.

UP on the Roof was also listed. It is a rooftop bar. Whatever else that is, it is not a dive.
