What remains is worth the detour, and none of it is downtown. The three below run from a Cherry Avenue counter with nearly 500 reviews behind it to a Grady Avenue window with a rating that has yet to settle.
1. La Flor Michoacana
The most thoroughly reviewed independent ice cream option in town, and the only one on this list with a rating that can be called proven: 4.7 across 479 reviews. The Cherry Avenue shop makes its own ice cream and sells it alongside traditional Mexican snacks, so a stop here can be dessert or an actual meal. Hours are consistent rather than seasonal, running 11 AM to 7 PM Monday through Friday and noon to 7 PM on weekends, which means the last orders go in earlier than at most scoop counters. Plan around that seven o'clock close if you are coming after dinner.
2. SugarBear Gourmet Ice Cream
Small-batch ice cream made locally, with the East High Street storefront open latest in the group: noon to 9 PM Sunday through Thursday and noon to 10 PM Friday and Saturday. A second SugarBear operates on Ivy Road, so the East High location is the one to note if you want the east side of town. The evidence here is thinner than at La Flor: 4.4 from 59 reviews is promising but not yet settled, and a handful of new opinions could move it either direction. Go for the rotating flavors rather than the standards, which is where a small-batch operation earns its keep.
3. Moo Thru Charlottesville
Ice cream made from Virginia dairy, with shakes, malts and sundaes on the same short menu. The Grady Avenue location keeps the longest hours of the three, 11 AM to 9 PM Sunday through Thursday and 11 AM to 10 PM Friday and Saturday, which makes it the practical late option once La Flor has closed for the evening. Be straight about the numbers: 4.0 across 105 reviews is the weakest showing in this guide, enough reviews to take seriously and lower than the other two. Come for the dairy-farm sourcing and the hours, not for consensus.
