Best Seafood in Charlottesville

Charlottesville, Virginia — updated August 21, 2026

Charlottesville is three hours from the coast. Four places here take seafood seriously anyway, and one is well ahead of the rest.

Listings verified

Charlottesville sits about three hours from the Chesapeake and further from the ocean, so seafood here is a deliberate act rather than a default. One restaurant is built entirely around it and the rest do a version of it well. If you only go to one, the answer is not close.

Public Fish & Oyster

The reason this guide exists. Public is a dedicated East Coast seafood restaurant with a raw bar on West Main, and its 4.7 across 940 reviews is the deepest and highest combination of any restaurant on this list by a wide margin. Nothing else in Charlottesville is doing oysters at this level.

Happy hour runs 4 to 6 every day, which is the cheapest way into a raw bar that is otherwise a special-occasion price. Reservations are worth making. (434) 995-5542.

Mockingbird

4.6 across 203 reviews, and the pick when Public is full or you want something quieter. Smaller room, smaller crowd, and a kitchen that treats fish as more than an obligation on an otherwise land-based menu.

Birch + Bloom

The hotel dining room at 540 Massie Road, inside The Forum. Grilled salmon is a fixture of the menu, and weekend brunch runs bottles of wine at half price, which is the specific reason to choose it over the others.

Dinner Monday to Saturday 5 to 9, breakfast weekdays from 7, brunch at weekends. (434) 365-2590.

Shadwells Restaurant

4.2 across 786 reviews, out east of town. A neighbourhood restaurant rather than a destination, and the least seafood-focused of the four, but it has held a steady rating across a large number of visits, which counts for something.

What we left off

Bonefish Grill was in the previous version. It is a national chain and does not need our help. Aberdeen Barn was too; it is a steakhouse, and it is covered properly in our steakhouse guide.

The previous version also recommended Milk & Honey Beauty Bungalow, which is a beauty salon. It was miscategorised as a restaurant in our own place data, and no one reading a seafood guide caught it because no one was reading these guides closely enough. That record has been corrected.
