Scottsdale's Indian restaurants are spread wide: one sits near Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard in the northeast, another downtown on Craftsman Court, a third up at Pinnacle Peak. Several close one day a week, and one of the best of them opens only in the late afternoon, so the schedule matters more here than in most categories. Below, four kitchens ranked by how well the ratings hold up against the number of people who left them.
1. Curries Indian Cuisine and Bar
A 4.9 average across more than 1,000 reviews is the strongest combination of score and volume of any Indian restaurant in this guide, and volume is what makes it credible. The kitchen is on North Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard, well northeast of downtown. Its two most-ordered dishes online are the Bang Bang Butter Chicken and the Chicken Tikka Masala Lababdar, and there is a South Indian style chicken curry served with rice. Note the schedule before driving out: closed Tuesdays, open from 11:30 AM the rest of the week, until 10 PM on Friday and Saturday and 9 PM otherwise.
2. Taj Mahal Restaurant & Lounge
The busiest Indian room in Scottsdale by a wide margin, with more than 1,800 reviews behind a 4.5 rating. That is a settled number rather than a promising one, which counts for a lot when you are booking a group. It is downtown on North Craftsman Court and opens at 11 AM every day of the week, running to 10 PM Sunday through Thursday and 11:30 PM on Friday and Saturday. The lounge hosts live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights, so plan on a louder room then. There is a separate Prescott location with different hours.
3. INDIBAR
The choice for small plates and drinks rather than a full curry dinner. The menu leads with things like pani puri, crab pani puri, kurkuri kamal kakdi, ragi papdi chaat, kale and walnut tikki, and masala fries, plus a dessert list and a happy hour that runs in the bar only. A 4.6 across 356 reviews is a solid record, if a smaller sample than the two above. Two scheduling points: it is closed Mondays, and it does not open until 4 PM, so there is no lunch. The address reads North Scottsdale Road in Paradise Valley.
4. Royale India - Indian Restaurant Bistro Scottsdale
Worth calling ahead. The restaurant's own site lists takeout hours with Monday closed, and Yelp shows an 11 AM open Tuesday through Sunday, but that same Yelp page carries a note that users have reported the location closed. The evidence is thin and contradictory, so treat it as a phone call before a drive to Pinnacle Peak Road. If it is serving, the tandoori selection is the draw, and diner reports single out the lamb chops, butter chicken and garlic naan. The 4.4 rating rests on 218 reviews, the smallest sample of the four restaurants here.
What we left off
Two entries from the previous version were not Indian restaurants at all. The Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt is an 11-mile city park corridor of paths, lakes and golf courses, and John C. Hill Antique Indian Art is a gallery of Native American art, jewelry, pottery and weavings on East 1st Avenue. Both are fine places, neither serves food, and both were removed on that basis.
