Come learn about the darker side of Philip Evergood's Dance Marathon with Assistant Curator of Prints and Drawings, Sarah Bane. Evergood's 1934 painting comments on a craze that swept the United States during the Great Depression in which couples would dance as long as possible, with the last-standing couple given a cash prize. Here, Evergood depicts exhausted couples struggling to stand, trapped on a dance floor that has transformed into a spider's web. A skeletal hand looms eerily in the corner, suggesting the artist's critical view of the popular spectacle.
