This talk explores how late Chosŏn Buddhist temples depicted celestial musicians, focusing on the shift from female celestial figures to youthful male performers. Drawing on 86 temple halls, Maya Stiller examines how painter-monks transformed familiar performance traditions into imagined musical offerings within Buddhist sacred spaces. Maya Stiller studies Korean religious art and history, with a focus on Buddhism, patronage, and temple culture from roughly 1200–1900.This lecture is generously supported by the UVA East Asia Center
