The interstate highway system reshaped American mobility, commerce, and cities, often at significant social cost. In this lecture, Dr. Bruce Appleyard—Professor of City Planning and Urban Design, former Neighborhood Planner and Planning Commissioner for the City of Charlottesville, and Policy Advocate for the Southern Environmental Law Center—examines the enduring tension between automobiles and community life. Drawing on his book, Livable Streets 2.0 (Elsevier, 2020), he presents evidence-based approaches for creating safer, healthier, and more connected streets. Supported by the Robert L. Plavnick Endowment.
